Hello and welcome to my December IT and Digital Newsletter for the North East. This is the second of my monthly updates to provide an overview and my perspective on what is happening within the region. From the good work and success stories, how the market is developing, what maybe is not working so well, what networks and events are coming up and general IT and Digital information that hopefully you will find useful.

New move, same business, endless opportunity…..

On Friday 23rd November, I had the pleasure of being invited along to Mediaworks to celebrate the opening of their brand-new offices!

Situated at the Honeycomb on the banks of the Tyne with fantastic views over the river, it is a move which has been months in the making, but one which has been necessary due to the huge success of the business, and their short- and longer-term growth plans.

Founded in 2007 and having built their reputation to recently being voted the Number 1 independent agency in the North East, and 37th throughout the UK in The Drum Top 100 Independent Agency Census 2018 (www.thedrum.com/lists/top-100-independent-agencies), you could be forgiven in thinking that would be enough for them, but no. The previous premises in Team Valley, allowed Mediaworks to work alongside some of the very best businesses in the North East, Yorkshire and Scotland and to grow the organisation to what they are today, and with new, larger premises there is now the capability of more to come…..

Off the back of my piece last month on DXC technology (www.linkedin.com/pulse/new-company-start-great-future-scott-mcgowan/), Jenna Ingoe, Strategic Partners, Community and Diversity Lead, has published an article demonstrating the top 10 Reasons why #DXCNewcastle and the Newcastle Digital Transformation Centre is the place to be.

Jenna says “Culture is at the heart and soul of everything we do at #DXCNewcastle”.

Since CSC and HP merged to become a new organisation DXC have been building their reputation in the market as a new business with a forward thinking mentality and a new way of working.

10 Things I Love About #DXCNewcastle

At the beginning of this month I went a long to the Tech Breakfast hosted at the New PROTO site in Gateshead. It was a brilliant morning allowing local businesses and contacts to network over a morning cup of coffee and in such brilliant surroundings. If you haven’t had the chance to visit PROTO I suggest you do. We are very lucky to have such an innovative facility on our doorstep!

I will be putting out a piece in the New Year about PROTO and the network event. In the mean time, there has been an article in the last month (click link below) which asks “Could Gateshead be set to become the Silicon Valley of the North?”

For me there is no reason why not. There are so many fantastic businesses already in the area and also brilliant start ups. We have an opportunity as a sector to make this happen.
On the other hand do we have the capability to keep up with demand in terms of skills? And what makes us so different to other parts of the country?

These are questions I will be asking in the January edition but in the mean time I will leave you with these questions.

On the 24th January 2019 myself and and DXC will be launching ‘Reinvest your Mindset’.
Right now the tech inudstry is dealing with..
66% of employers facing problems hiring in the tech sector
11% drop in students taking GCSE IT YOY
An ageing population
By 2022 the UK will see….
A need for 1.2 million additional employees with digital skills
A small 3% rise in women taking on technology roles
Threat to the labour flow due to political landscape
By 2030 the UK will have 3 million jobs left unfilled. It’s time to stop reinventing the wheel and start reinventing your mindset.
Organisations in the North East are working on some phenomenal projects to drive the future of Tech in the NE and in the wider UK but we see lots of people reinventing the wheel over and over again – we want to bridge that gap!
